Ethics in business - what are the basic values?

In the modern world, ethics has become a signpost in the conduct of both entrepreneurs and employees. This is the only right, though not always followed, direction of achieving financial and professional success.

Business ethics is the relationship between an enterprise and its clients, business partners, employees and competitors. These relationships must be in accordance with applicable law and accepted rules of conduct. They also include compliance with standards set by the public. These standards are constantly reviewed by the public.

Enterprises, striving to achieve the highest possible profit and minimize their own costs, sometimes make controversial decisions contrary to the norms of social coexistence. These decisions relate to business partners, employees, customers and competitors.

Business ethics should be the foundation of every organization's activities. Getting to know and using it serves better business. Ethical responsibility can improve the company's operation and reduce the costs of any conflicts arising from ignorance of the moral rules by the business world.

Business ethics - basic values:

  • responsibility, which means that the company is ready to take responsibility for the impact it has on the environment and readiness to change and to withdraw from erroneous decisions and to take responsibility for the resulting damage,

  • transparency, i.e. sharing information about decisions and activities related to those aspects of the company's operation that are related to society,

  • ethical behavior when all decisions are made and implemented in a fair, reliable, credible manner and without accepting or giving illegal benefits. Ethical behavior also means personal values ​​and a sense of responsibility of the owner of the company, readiness to treat other people as equals, honesty and commitment,

  • active presence in the environment, i.e. the awareness that the company does not operate in isolation from the environment. Interoperability and local activity are important.

It is worth remembering that the company is made up of people and that in order for the company to be ethical, the conduct of its employees must be appropriate. The dishonesty of employees or their reprehensible behavior affects the reputation of the entire company. The company's business card is its employees, which is why it is important to choose the right staff in the company.

The ethical behavior of the boss or employee is:

  • respect for others (respect for their dignity, beliefs and views),

  • keeping business secret and confidentiality of data,

  • honest performance of their duties,

  • care for a good atmosphere at work,

  • intolerance of discrimination.

A good atmosphere at work promotes commitment and motivates to achieve better. The role of the superior is to create working conditions in which relationships between people are based on integrity, honesty and cooperation.

It is worth establishing a code of ethics in the company. The Code should be written in clearly worded sections and presented to employees at all professional levels. Such action facilitates compliance with the principles of ethics in the workplace and eliminates possible understatement or misunderstanding of the importance of the topic of ethics in business. Writing down the company's mission and goals also helps to comply with ethical behavior in the company.
